In recent years, technological advancements in the machine tool industry has grown exponentially. This acceleration of advancements is a challenge for vocational education. The VDW-Nachwuchsstiftung (foundation for secondary education) aims to strengthen and improve the transfer of knowledge between industry and vocational education.This task-based educational training manual was created by the collaboration of vocational educators and industry trained personnel.The intention of this manual is to introduce the techniques used in the design and manufacturing process. It is important that you exercise self-organization throughout the learning process. This manual also includes some additional information on the technical and methodical aspects of CAD/CAM.

This training manual was developed for you as both an informational and instructional booklet. It is provided to teach you the basics of CAD/CAM technology. The structure of this manual not only conforms to the teaching methods and curriculum guidelines required by schools and universities, but also the methodologies used by design and manufacturing professionals alike. For each task-based lesson, the final process is shown using part and assembly drawings. A general explanation accompanies each task to be performed, which should not be used as a direct solution. The process of determining an answer to each problem should be solved individually. In the same way, the content in this manual was created to help you develop the skills necessary to apply best practices related to CAD/CAM business operations.Like in today’s manufacturing departments, you will have to produce the components and final assembled part for an adjustable workpiece stop (vise stop). Each lesson is comprised of the following tasks: Analysis of the task in relation to the final goal Planning of a workflowImplementation of the workflow in the design, manufacturing and documentation Presentation of the results followed by discussion Reflection of the procedures and the end result

About SolidCAM product family. SolidCAM, InventorCAM and the standalone SolidCAM CAD/CAM suite are the flagship products. SolidCAM and InventorCAM integrate with SolidWorks and Inventor, respectively. Officially approved partners and all that. Their CNC programming toolsets look and feel like the CAD systems as much as possible, making the learning curve shorter. You define, calculate and verify all your machining operations without leaving the CAD environment. You give it your toolpath, stock, tool material and machine specifications then it derives optimal feeds, step over depths and widths as well as cutting speeds. For you old hands, the company says iMachining can save you 70% or more in CNC machining time and extends tool life dramatically.

Siemens become the first major CAD/CAM/CAE vendor to deliver its software using Continuous Release methodology in January 2019.

With this deployment model, NX customers will be able to access new improvements more quickly while reducing the effort required to implement NX. This makes Siemens the first major CAD / CAM / CAE software provider to publish product updates in this way and provides innovations and improvements in the software even faster.

The main change for you as a customer are the monthly update releases, which are made available to you within a single release series. Bugs are therefore no longer fixed in different releases, just in the latest update and even smaller extensions are integrated promptly, which raises the quality to a new level. Significant enhancements that may affect the schema and compatibility are expected approximately every six months. Whether and when you roll out updates in your company, if you automate the updates or if you want to use different versions on the same hardware remains your decision.

NX CAM engineer Aaron Blake covered what's new in NX CAM continuous release 1872, with a focus on changes in Fundamentals, Milling, Integrated Simulation and Verification (ISV), Postprocessing, and Feature-based Machining. Toward the end, Aaron also covers some of his core CAM tips & tricks.

Windows 10 is the minimum supported release for NX 1867. The supported versions of Windows 10 are the Professional and Enterprise editions utilizing either the Current Branch for Business (CBB) or Long Term Service Branch (LTSB) update branch. The Current Branch (CB) update option is not supported. Windows 10 is also available for NX 10.0.3 and later versions including NX 1867. Any caveats or special instructions are provided in the SFB announcing support.
Windows 7 and 8.1
Windows 7 has reached the end of life and mainstream support has ended. Windows 8.1 is still supported by Microsoft, but was rarely deployed. These two versions of Windows are no longer supported by NX 1867. Siemens PLM Software has not performed testing on these versions and cannot resolve any issues related to NX 1867 running on these operating systems.
Windows XP and Vista
Windows XP support from Microsoft has ended and Vista was rarely deployed so these two versions of Windows are not supported by NX 1867. Siemens PLM Software has not performed testing on these versions and cannot resolve any issues related to NX 1867 running on these operating systems.

About Autodesk ReCap Pro. This product started as Project Memento, Autodesk’s attempt to built a photogrammetry tool from the ground up. When Memento was still in beta it was free and available for Mac and PC. While both offered cloud processing (still a unique feature) only the PC version offered local processing on top of that, relying on Nvdia GPU acceleration.

When the project came out of beta in early 2017 it was rebranded to ReMake and marketed as a standalone photogrammetry tool for capturing objects and small environments.

ReMake was a great piece of software that combined great photogrammetry algorithms with an innovative user interface that offered a vast collection of mesh-editing tools.

Unfortunately ReMake lived a short life because the Mac version was killed in March, 2017 and Autodesk decided to discontinue ReMake as a whole at the end of 2017. Since december, the product has been moved under the ReCap Pro subscription, which focuses on processing an registration of laser scan data for construction and engineering purposes (it’s also the dedicated software for the innovative Leica BLK360 laser scanner). To fit within that concept, ReCap Photo got new support for areal photogrammetry features.

In the end, ReCap Photo is still just rebranded version of ReMake. You can now also launch it by choosing Photo to 3D in ReCap Pro but it installs as a separate application that can be launched independently.

SolidCAM is a CAM software that integrates directly into SolidWorks and Inventor. Maxsurf provides naval architects with software tools for all phases of the vessel design and analysis process. By using a common 3D surface model, design files can be optimized to accurately flow through concept, initial, and detailed design stages. With Maxsurf, users can confidently model hull forms; assess stability and strength; predict performance; and carry out initial structural definition and analysis.

All Maxsurf modules share a consistent graphical interface—which reduces training time, increases ease of use, and allows designers to visualize complex configurations. Maxsurf is based on industry standards, including trimmed NURB surface modeling, DXF, and IGES data exchange. It also exhibits powerful interoperability, easily transferring data with Bentley’s MicroStation, as well as Rhino, AutoCAD, ShipConstructor, SolidWorks, and Microsoft Office programs.

Note: For Window 8 and 8.1, you must have the Microsoft KB2919355 installed on your machine. Bentley does not support its software running on Microsoft operating systems versions that Microsoft has "retired".

The software prerequisites are included in the MAXSURF installer.

Supported i-model publishing engines
Publishing i-models from MAXSURF Modeler requires Bentley ItgDgnDbImporter 1.5.
Publishing i-models from MAXSURF Multiframe requires Bentley ISM

Microsoft Office
For reporting using Microsoft Word, this must be installed on the system.

Minimum Profile
The minimum recommended workstation profile for running MAXSURF CONNECT Edition is:

Processor: Intel or AMD processor 1.0 GHz or greater. MicroStation is not supported on a CPU that does not support SSE2.
Memory: 4 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended. More memory almost always improves performance, particularly when working with larger models.
Hard Disk: 4 GB free disk space (which includes the 2 GB install footprint for a complete installation)
Video: Graphics card which fully supports DirectX 11 and OpenGL with up to date drivers. A stand-alone graphics card with 512 MB of video RAM or higher is recommended.
Screen: A resolution of at least 1024 x 768 or higher.

No Longer Supported or Delivered

Windows 7 support: Whilst MAXSURF software may well continue to function on Windows 7 with SP1, this operating system is no longer officially supported by Bentley Systems. Microsoft support for Windows 7 ended on January 14, 2020.32-bit operating systems are no longer supported.
